Unawatuna is one of the most popular places in Sri Lanka. Tourists on vacation generally prefer these beaches in the south of the island.
The town itself is small but has shops, restaurants, guesthouses and some activities to do.
Unawatuna beach
The main Unawatuna beach is popular with tourists and locals alike. Perfect for swimming, part of the beach has deckchairs for hire.
The beach is accessible directly from the streets, with small bars and restaurants around.

Wijaya beach (beach swing)
Known for its famous swing on Instagram, Wijaya Beach is undoubtedly one of the most popular places in Sri Lanka.
To find it, it is not exactly on the beach but on the right a little further.
To find the exact location, search for " Dream Cabana " on Google Maps.
The owner of the bar is super nice. The price (and yes everything has to be paid nowadays) is 2.45 € for 5 times (or a little more if you are nice)

Jungle Beach
This beach is more hidden and more wild, you will find mostly locals. It is not super easy to access, you will need a scooter (to park further to avoid paying the "parking") and a small walk downhill is necessary.
It is about 10-15 min journey from the city of Unawatuna

Surf
There are several spots to rent boards for almost nothing along the main beach.
If you walk to the end of the beach, there are rocks, and the waves are a little stronger. Be careful : experienced surfers only because many rocks and corals, the falls can hurt!

Have a drink or swim in a magnificent infinity pool facing the sea
Luna Terrace, near Fort Galle, has a bar and an infinity pool with sea views. Perfect for a drink and relaxing with a swim at sunset.
Note: you have to pay a little extra to swim even if you consume drinks.

Discover an ethical sanctuary that protects baby turtles
In Habaraduwa, a little further south than Unawatuna but accessible by scooter or bus, there is a turtle refuge.
From eggs that are harvested, to babies waiting to be released at sea, to injured or malformed adult turtles, this center takes care of everything.
You will have a small donation at the entrance (around € 4.92) which helps the volunteers to run this center. They will take you on a guided tour and explain everything to you.

Between December and April / between July and late September.
How to get around Unawatuna?
The motorbike for around 5 € per day, petrol included, local buses for a few cents, or tuk tuk.
Where to stay in Unawatuna?
We had found a little paradise to stay in. Inexpensive, clean, cute, close to the beach, and the hosts are lovely.
